Where was Martin Luther King originally buried?
His remains were exhumed in 1970 and reburied at their current location at the plaza between the King Center and Ebenezer, and his widow Coretta was buried next to him in 2006.
In a display of deep respect for King's commitment to nonviolent protest, his hometown, Atlanta, remained calm, and it was to that city that tens of thousands came to pay their respects to the fallen leader on April 9, when his funeral rites were observed.
The album is a recording of MLK's funeral services held on April 9, 1968 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
Meanwhile, on his journey back to Wittenberg, Luther was “kidnapped” by soldiers of Frederick and taken secretly to Wartburg Castle, near the town of Eisenach, where he remained in hiding for the better part of a year.
The large white marble gravestone at proper right is partially cut of the image. The tomb reads [REV MARTIN LUTHER KING JR / 1929-1968 / "FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, / THANK GOD ALMIGHTY I'M FREE AT LAST."] There is a space in front of the headstone that is filled with small pebbles and lined in stone.
On September 20, 1958, alumnus Aubré de Lambert Maynard, MD, was credited with saving the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Stabbed in the chest by a disturbed woman at a book-signing event in a Harlem department store, Dr. King was taken to Harlem Hospital.

Did Aretha Franklin perform at Martin Luther King's funeral?
At just 16 years old, Franklin joined the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on tour, singing gospel at civil rights rallies across the country, and in 1968, she sang the gospel classic, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” at Dr. King's funeral.
Wartburg Castle, Eisenach
This Unesco site was Luther's hiding place, where he stayed after he was declared an outlaw in 1521.
Here's Why They're Still Causing Controversy. Five hundred years ago, on Oct. 31, 1517, the small-town monk Martin Luther marched up to the castle church in Wittenberg and nailed his 95 Theses to the door, thus lighting the flame of the Reformation — the split between the Catholic and Protestant churches.
Incredible new pictures emerge of Martin Luther King's four-mile-long funeral procession on 50th anniversary of his death. New photos have emerged of the day hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Atlanta in April 1968 to say goodbye to Martin Luther King Jr.
In 1521, the pope excommunicated him, and he was called to appear before the emperor at the Diet of Worms to defend his beliefs. Refusing to recant or rescind his positions, Luther was declared an outlaw and a heretic.
Immediately after Luther's death, Catholic pamphlets spread rapidly, alleging that Luther had drunk himself to death with alcohol. One of his retainers, Ambrosio Kudtfeld, attested that he had hanged himself, and some of the details he gave of Luther's appearance were corroborated.
But I want you to know, tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!” He ended with an utterance of religious fervor, saying that he was not worried, that he did not fear anybody, exclaiming in a final flourish, “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
In his last moments, Luther was asked by his friend Justus Jonas, “Do you want to die standing firm on Christ and the doctrine you have taught?” He answered emphatically, “Yes!” Luther's last words were: “We are beggars.
The inscription currently reads: "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness." The phrase is chiselled into one side of a massive block of granite that includes King's likeness emerging from the stone. It became a point of controversy after the memorial opened in August.
Martin Luther King, Jr. grew up in the Auburn Avenue community of Atlanta. Born on January 15, 1929 in the home shared by his grandparents and parents, King lived there until he was 12. King stayed in Atlanta until he graduated from Morehouse College.
Why was Georgia important to Martin Luther King?
The significance of Georgia's civil rights legacy is undeniable. It's the state where the movement's most prominent leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was born and raised, where he preached and organized, where he learned valuable lessons, and where he and his wife are buried.
Martin Luther King Jr. was living in a brick home on Sunset Avenue in an Atlanta neighborhood known as Vine City. The civil rights leader had moved there in 1965 — the year after he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize — and the house was a refuge for him, his daughter Bernice King said Thursday.
Luther's father wanted him to become a lawyer. Luther attended school from a young age and was sent to the University of Erfurt to study. Legendarily, Luther was caught in a terrible thunderstorm and he made a vow to St. Anna that if he was saved from it he would become a monk.
King lived for the four years prior to his death in 1968.
was born in Atlanta this day in 1929. Jan. 15, 2022 would have been MLK's 93rd birthday.
On October 30, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rev. Ralph Abernathy were arrested and forced to begin serving sentences in Birmingham jail because they led peaceful protests against unconstitutional bans on race mixing in Birmingham in 1963.
An ambitious man, Hans wanted his son to become a lawyer. In 1501, the 19-year-old Martin went to Erfurt to study at the university there.
King's family when the National Park Service Foundation bought it from them a year ago. Dr. King bought the house in 1964 – just months after his “I Have A Dream” speech. He and Coretta Scott King moved in to raise their four young children there.
On 18 June 1953, the two students were married in Marion, Alabama, where Scott's family lived. Although he considered pursuing an academic career, King decided in 1954 to accept an offer to become the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
Lutherhaus, Wittenberg
Luther moved into the monastery in 1508, and it is here that he wrote his treatise. The monastery was dissolved as a result of the Reformation, but Luther continued living there and was joined by his wife and family in 1525.
