Where is Martin Luther King actually buried?
The King Center and Tomb are located across Auburn Avenue from the National Park Service Visitor Center. Coretta Scott King chose this location for her husband's tomb between his birth home and his spiritual home, Ebenezer Baptist Church.
The current burial place of Dr. King is on the grounds of the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site near Ebenezer Baptist Church and Dr. King's birth home on Auburn Avenue, in Atlanta.
To be clear, South-View Cemetery is the resting place of Martin Luther King Jr's parents - not MLK Jr. US Rep and civil rights hero John Lewis is also buried here. MLK Jr was initially buried at South-View, but his tomb was moved five miles north decades ago to the MLK National Historic Park.
In 2006, after Coretta Scott King's passing, she was laid to rest next to Martin Luther King, Junior above ground, surrounded by a pool of water.
After giving a trial sermon to the congregation at Ebenezer at the age of 19 Martin was ordained as a minister. In 1960 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. became a co-pastor of Ebenezer with his father, Rev.

One of those loyal guests was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the restaurant was reportedly one of his favorite restaurants. Aleck's was located near the West Hunter Street Baptist Church, where Rev. Ralph Abernathy, one of Dr.
Georgia, where Dr. King was from, has the most MLK streets — more than 100. Here in Texas, 19 cities have MLK streets.
Martin Luther King Jr. was living in a brick home on Sunset Avenue in an Atlanta neighborhood known as Vine City. The civil rights leader had moved there in 1965 — the year after he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize — and the house was a refuge for him, his daughter Bernice King said Thursday.

Why is Alabama important to Martin Luther King?
White officials in Alabama conducted two concerted efforts to defeat Martin Luther King, Jr., and the civil rights movement legally, by indicting King for violating an anti-boycotting law during the Montgomery bus boycott and for income tax fraud, in 1956 and 1960, respectively.
Meanwhile, on his journey back to Wittenberg, Luther was “kidnapped” by soldiers of Frederick and taken secretly to Wartburg Castle, near the town of Eisenach, where he remained in hiding for the better part of a year.

King was assassinated in 1968, when he was not yet 40 years old. Born in Atlanta in 1929, King could very much still be alive today and would have celebrated his 93rd birthday on January 15, 2022. King was an extraordinarily gifted student.
Frederick the Wise is remembered as the man who saved Martin Luther from the fury of the Catholic Church. Frederick was born in Hartenfels Castle, Torgau in 1463, the first son of the Elector Ernst of the House of Wettin.
On September 20, 1958, alumnus Aubré de Lambert Maynard, MD, was credited with saving the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Stabbed in the chest by a disturbed woman at a book-signing event in a Harlem department store, Dr. King was taken to Harlem Hospital.
In Hiding: Wartburg Castle
Emperor Charles issued the Edict of Worms, declaring Luther a heretic and ordering his death. Frederick the Wise of Saxony favored Luther and arranged for him to be "kidnapped" and taken to Wartburg Castle near the town of Eisenach.
King's birth name was Michael, not Martin.
In 1934, however, his father, a pastor at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, traveled to Germany and became inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther. As a result, King Sr. changed his own name as well as that of his 5-year-old son (from history.com).

In 1968, the year King was assassinated, Chicago became the first city to rename a street after the Civil Rights icon.
In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
Luther's German translation of the New Testament appeared in 1522. He then translated the whole of the Bible into German with the first edition being published in Wittenberg in 1534.

The image of Martin Luther that has lasted was of a very large man. Martin Luther physically embodied the Reformation. The prints and paintings issued from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder and then the Younger after 1530 show a “corpulent,” “double-chinned” “stout doctor” filling the frame.

In January 1521, the Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther. He was then summoned to appear at the Diet of Worms, an assembly of the Holy Roman Empire. He refused to recant and Emperor Charles V declared him an outlaw and a heretic. Luther went into hiding at Wartburg Castle.
Martin Luther, the chief catalyst of Protestantism, defies the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V by refusing to recant his writings. He had been called to Worms, Germany, to appear before the Diet (assembly) of the Holy Roman Empire and answer charges of heresy.
Luther stated, “I am completely willing to retract all errors, and I will be the first to throw all my books in the fire,” but he would do this only if the authorities could provide evidence from the Bible that he had erred.
King was not a great admirer of rock 'n' roll, but Presley greatly admired King, who was killed less than nine miles from Presley's home at Graceland. Presley was unable to attend the funeral in person as he was filming Live a Little, Love a Little, one of his many movies.
At just 16 years old, Franklin joined the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on tour, singing gospel at civil rights rallies across the country, and in 1968, she sang the gospel classic, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” at Dr. King's funeral.
His remains were exhumed in 1970 and reburied at their current location at the plaza between the King Center and Ebenezer, and his widow Coretta was buried next to him in 2006.
Do all 50 states recognize Martin Luther King Day?
At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

Grave sites spread across states
The most common burial place for the 39 presidents who have died is Virginia with seven presidents buried there. The next is New York with six, Ohio with five and Tennessee with three. Two presidents each are buried in Massachusetts, Texas and California.
Christ Church Burial Ground opened in 1719 and remains active today. This is the final resting place of some of our nation's most prominent founders, including five signers of the Declaration of Independence: Benjamin Franklin, Francis Hopkinson, Benjamin Rush, Joseph Hewes and George Ross.
