Is there a catch with high-yield savings accounts?
While you can grow your money daily and take on zero risk with high-yield savings, they are not the best way to grow your wealth long-term. The rate of inflation can be higher than the yield you earn over time, so it's better to not keep piling cash into your savings and instead invest your money.
Limited withdrawals
Like traditional savings accounts, some financial institutions may limit the number of withdrawals and transfers you can make from a high-yield savings account each month. Exceeding this limit could possibly result in fees or restrictions on your account.
Some disadvantages of a high-yield savings account include few withdrawal options, limitations on how many monthly withdrawals you can make, and no access to a branch network if you need it. But for most people, these aren't major issues.
Myth 1: Your money is stuck in a savings account
This is what makes savings accounts — and high-yield savings accounts especially — such a good choice for keeping your emergency fund. Even as your money grows, you can still withdraw from the account as needed.
But according to federal law, high-yield savings accounts allow you to withdraw or transfer your cash out of your account up to six times per month without paying any fees.
Millionaires Like High-Yield Savings, but Not as Much as Other Accounts. Usually offering significantly more interest than a traditional savings account, high-yield savings accounts have blown up in popularity among everyone, including millionaires.
1. Certificates of Deposit. Like high-yield savings accounts, CDs usually offer substantially higher annual percentage yields (APYs) than traditional savings accounts. As of October 2023, the average CD rates range from 4.60% to 5.55%, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
While high-yield savings accounts offer higher interest rates than traditional savings accounts, they may not outpace inflation, potentially eroding your purchasing power over time. As a result, they're not typically recommended for long-term wealth-building or retirement savings.
Although each financial situation is unique, it doesn't typically make sense for you to keep all of your money in a high-yield savings account.
No financial institutions currently offer 7% interest savings accounts. But some smaller banks and regional credit unions are currently paying more than 6.00% APY on savings accounts and up to 9.00% APY on checking accounts, though these accounts have restrictions and requirements.
How much is too much in high-yield savings account?
Gaines reiterates that even most high-yield savings accounts lose value to inflation over time. “More than two months' worth of living expenses in a savings account is too much given the ability to earn around 5% from easily accessible money market accounts that should not fluctuate in price.”
Stampf recommends keeping six to 12 months' worth of expenses in a high-yield savings account for easy access to cash in case of an emergency and saving for larger expenses that are are coming in the short term, like buying a home.
If you have $10,000 to invest, here's what your earnings would be at different interest rates: After one year with a regular account at 0.42%: $10,042.00. After one year with a high-yield account at 4.50%: $10,450.00. After one year with a high-yield account at 5.00%: $10,500.00.
5.25% APY: A 5.25% CD or high-yield savings account will bring you $2,625 in interest within a year. 5.5% APY: Choosing a 5.5% CD or high-yield savings account will result in $2,750 in interest on your $50,000 investment annually.
Do I have to pay taxes on HYSA? Yes, you have to pay taxes on the interest earned from a savings account. If you earn more than $10 in interest on your savings account, the bank holding your account will send you a Form 1099-T to include in your tax return.
Millionaires can insure their money by depositing funds in FDIC-insured accounts, NCUA-insured accounts, through IntraFi Network Deposits, or through cash management accounts. They may also allocate some of their cash to low-risk investments, such as Treasury securities or government bonds.
Demand Deposit Account (DDA) & Money Market Deposit Account (MMDA) DDA/MMDA allows you to place funds into demand deposit and/or money market deposit accounts. You can deposit up to $100 million for each account type.
The flexibility of having more than one account can also help you manage fluctuations in interest rates, which could be important when the Fed eventually pauses its hikes and rates begin to move lower. Holding your savings in multiple accounts can also be a way to help you stay on track to meet specific goals.
A 401(k) is better for long-term retirement savings due to tax benefits and higher growth potential, while a high-yield savings account is suitable for short-term goals and immediate access.
This is why it is important to understand when your credit is going to be pulled and which type of credit pull is being performed. Opening a savings account only has the potential to trigger a soft credit inquiry and it doesn't impact your credit score.
How to earn 8 percent interest?
High-Yield Savings Accounts: While less common, some high-yield savings accounts or certificates of deposit (CDs) may offer interest rates around 8 percent, though these rates are usually subject to change and may vary by institution.
In terms of savings accounts specifically, you'll likely find different estimates from different sources. The average American has $65,100 in savings — excluding retirement assets — according to Northwestern Mutual's 2023 Planning & Progress Study. That's a 5% increase over the $62,000 reported in 2022.
Having $20,000 in a savings account is a good starting point if you want to create a sizable emergency fund. When the occasional rainy day comes along, you'll be financially prepared for it. Of course, $20,000 may only go so far if you find yourself in an extreme situation.
The 50-30-20 rule recommends putting 50% of your money toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings. The savings category also includes money you will need to realize your future goals. Let's take a closer look at each category.
Some disadvantages of a high-yield savings account include few withdrawal options, limitations on how many monthly withdrawals you can make, and no access to a branch network if you need it. But for most people, these aren't major issues.
