Is 10% return on investment realistic?
While 10% might be the average, the returns in any given year are far from average. In fact, between 1926 and 2022, returns were in that “average” band of 8% to 12% only seven times. The rest of the time they were much lower or, usually, much higher. Volatility is the state of play in the stock market.
Most investors would view an average annual rate of return of 10% or more as a good ROI for long-term investments in the stock market. However, keep in mind that this is an average. Some years will deliver lower returns -- perhaps even negative returns. Other years will generate significantly higher returns.
A good return on investment is generally considered to be around 7% per year, based on the average historic return of the S&P 500 index, adjusted for inflation. The average return of the U.S. stock market is around 10% per year, adjusted for inflation, dating back to the late 1920s.
General ROI: A positive ROI is generally considered good, with a normal ROI of 5-7% often seen as a reasonable expectation. However, a strong general ROI is something greater than 10%. Return on Stocks: On average, a ROI of 7% after inflation is often considered good, based on the historical returns of the market.
Individual stocks can return well over 10%, but investing can be risky – there's no guarantee you'll make money. Rather than invest in a single stock, index funds offer a convenient way to diversify across a large basket of stocks. By doing so, you can earn more predictable returns.
Relatively safer investments may see less volatility in an average year, but if you have a long enough timeline, you have the potential to earn that 20% return eventually.
If the average dividend yield of your portfolio is 4%, you'd need a substantial investment to generate $3,000 per month. To be precise, you'd need an investment of $900,000. This is calculated as follows: $3,000 X 12 months = $36,000 per year.
- High-yield savings accounts.
- Money market funds.
- Short-term certificates of deposit.
- Series I savings bonds.
- Treasury bills, notes, bonds and TIPS.
- Corporate bonds.
- Dividend-paying stocks.
- Preferred stocks.
The truth is that most investors won't have the money to generate $1,000 per month in dividends; not at first, anyway. Even if you find a market-beating series of investments that average 3% annual yield, you would still need $400,000 in up-front capital to hit your targets. And that's okay.
Generally, what's considered a bad interest rate is anything higher than 10%. Ideally, you want to get an interest rate that's below 5% — but with little or bad credit, that can be harder to achieve.
Where do millionaires keep their money?
Cash equivalents are financial instruments that are almost as liquid as cash and are popular investments for millionaires. Examples of cash equivalents are money market mutual funds, certificates of deposit, commercial paper and Treasury bills. Some millionaires keep their cash in Treasury bills.
Average Rate of Return: This is more difficult to calculate because by their nature private equity firms and hedge don't always report their losses and earnings. However, most estimates suggest that you can expect average returns of up to 14%.
An aggressive portfolio is designed to pursue above-average returns. These portfolios strive to provide some of the highest returns of all portfolio configurations. But for those returns, investors must take on higher risk (i.e., volatility).
- Private credit.
- Individual stocks.
- Real estate.
- Fine art.
- Debt.
- A business.
- Private startups.
- Cryptocurrencies.
Of course! The highest average 30-year geometric return was 13.7%, so it's definitely possible. At the same time, though, the lowest average 30-year geometric return has been 8.5%, so it's been lower as well.
Stock exchange markets are considered inherently unstable and unpredictable, however, in the long run, they eventually tend to rise, and though a return as good as 15% each year might not always be achievable in the stock market, an annual return of around 15% may be possible over the foreseeable future, but remember, ...

How did they reach 12%? Orman and Ramsey haven't just plucked the 12% figure out of thin air. It stems from the historical average annual return of the S&P 500 (with dividends reinvested). Ramsey's website cites a New York University dataset which says the S&P 500 average from 1928 to 2023 was 11.66%.
Aiming for a 30% return necessitates venturing far from established benchmarks, venturing into riskier and less predictable territory. This often involves concentrated bets on individual stocks or volatile sectors, exposing you to the potential for substantial losses, negating even slight gains.
A great way to grow 100K into a million is through a diversified investment portfolio. This can include exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for broad market exposure, dividend stocks for steady income, and growth stocks for higher potential returns.
What if I invest $200 a month for 20 years?
Many retirement planners suggest using a more modest annual return of 6% when forecasting the long-term performance of a portfolio. At 6%, after 20 years the $200-a-month portfolio would be worth $93,070. After 40 years earning the same return, your model portfolio would be up to about $398,000.
A $100,000 salary can yield a monthly income of $8,333.33, a biweekly paycheck of $3,846.15, a weekly income of $1,923.08, and a daily income of $384.62 based on 260 working days per year.
1. Government Bonds: Considered low-risk, bonds issued by stable governments can provide steady returns, although they may not always reach 8%. 2. Certificates of Deposit (CDs): CDs from reputable banks offer fixed interest rates for a specified term, providing a guaranteed return.
Investors seeking stability in a recession often turn to investment-grade bonds. These are debt securities issued by financially strong corporations or government entities. They offer regular interest payments and a smaller risk of default, relative to bonds with lower ratings.
The concept of the "safest investment" can vary depending on individual perspectives and economic contexts, but generally, cash and government bonds, particularly U.S. Treasury securities, are often considered among the safest investment options available. This is because there is minimal risk of loss.
