How to find buried sprinkler heads?
Without digging, it is possible to find sprinkler lines by getting a design map from the company that installed the system. If this is not possible, one could go to the valve box and follow a line back to each of the head sprinklers in a circuit. Or one could utilize an electronic water-detection device.

After a hard rain, a long winter, landscape renovations or periods when they're not used, sprinkler heads can get buried underground. Once a sprinkler head is buried, it may not automatically pop back out of the ground when you turn on the sprinkler system. This can pose problems such as uneven watering and flooding.
Typical trench depths range from 6 to 12 inches. To run pipe under existing walkways you can "drill" using water pressure.
Irrigation lines are typically installed at a depth of 10” (to the top of the pipe) to prevent a standard 8\" shovel blade from reaching the lines. A 12” depth would be best. This is for residential installations, not commercial. The mainline (pressurized line) should be between 12” to 18” deep.
Pull a metal garden rake gently over the area of the grass where you suspect sprinkler heads are located if you cannot turn water on to the system. If the sprinkler heads are buried, you may need to apply greater pressure to the rake so it digs slightly into the soil.
The KUT-IT irrigation tool is a unique double ended tool that cuts grass away from your pop-up sprinkler or rotating sprinkler head, either by hand or by ratchet or by a battery powered drill; it also, on the other end, has a multi-sized series of small teeth to grab your rotor and easily turn it.
Metal detectors can find sprinklers heads and valves without a problem because they have some parts that are made out of metal. But if these metal parts are too small, the detector can't find them. Sprinkler heads have springs to move the riser; valves have screws, springs, and solenoids.
Valves can be grouped together in manifolds, or installed individually - and valves should always be buried inside a plastic irrigation valve box. Never bury a valve directly in the dirt.
Typically, though, a sprinkler system zone will boast 5 to 6 rotor heads and/or 8 to 10 spray heads.
Can you replace sprinkler head without digging?
Anytime you change sprinkler heads even without digging or when doing other repairs where dirt can get in the lines you'll need to flush the system. Sometimes it'll be necessary more than once. To do this turn on the zone with the new head without the nozzle.
Over time, sprinkler heads settle, tilt, and sink due to the natural compaction of soil, foot traffic, and lawn mowers running over them. When a sprinkler head tilts in one direction, it changes the spray pattern from the original design.
Because of the lower PSI the distance of the spray rarely exceeds 15ft. Meaning that spray heads should never be placed further than 15 ft. apart as this would create dry spots (i.e. dead grass) in your lawn. It is always important to install sprinklers with overlap for full coverage.
The depth should be around 6-8 inches to give you some room to work. Carefully lift the grass around the sprinkler head and flip it upside down on the lawn. With a small trowel, remove the dirt from around the sprinkler head taking care not to hit the sprinkler line. Dig deep enough to unscrew the head.
A sprinkler system will freeze if the temperature falls below 32° F (0° Celsius). Now, most indoor sprinkler systems are inside of buildings or homes where the temperature won't ever drop into the danger zone.

. All standard sprinkler heads—pendent, upright, and sidewall—have the same minimum sprinkler distance from walls: four inches. For sidewall heads, that's the distance from an end wall (10.3. 4.3.
Above ground sprinklers are extremely easy to install, as they're usually attached at the end of your garden hose. They don't require digging any holes or messing around with your home's pipe system. They're pretty straightforward and have a rather simple design.
Smart Watering Made Simple. Connect your Rain Bird controller to your mobile device to turn on sprinklers, set up customized watering schedules, and automate weather adjustments, saving you water and money.
A simple tool known as a chatter locator energizes the valve solenoid, making it possible to locate the valve by listening for the clicking sound it makes. Another rental tool, known as a valve locator, can find a valve by tracing the controller wires using a transmitter, receiver, lead wires, and a grounding stake.
Can a metal detector detect under water?
Metal detectors will work underwater and freshwater has very little effect on how they function (saltwater is another story). Additionally you can use a metal detector in the rain with no adverse effect on their functionality.
Master valves are a common component in most irrigation systems, but they are not always required. A master valve is an automatic valve that is installed at the point where the irrigation system connects to the water supply.
One of the components that you may need to replace regularly are the wires, often due to improper installation and corrosion. Valves will give you 10 to 15 years of service, while controllers 5 to 10 years.
You install anti-siphon valves above the ground, preventing water from flowing back into the sprinkler system. These anti-siphon valves are typically used in residential applications. Backflow preventers, on the other hand, are installed below the ground.
The Tempo 521A wire locator is a universal maintenance and troubleshooting tool for electrically controlled sprinkler irrigation systems, and able to locate the wire path, depth, wire breaks, large nicks, and solenoid valves.
To start, turn your Wire Locator Receiver on near the transmitter. You should hear a very distinctive solid tone. As you walk away from the transmitter the tone will disappear. Hold the Signal Receiver Pendulum near the ground and walk towards the wire.

Because a zone runs all the sprinkler heads on it at one time, putting too many on one zone lowers the water pressure for each sprinkler head. If you notice poor performance, reduce the number of heads on the affected zone.
Running multiple zones at once is usually not possible due water-pressure and flow limitations at residential properties. As with any standard irrigation controller, you can wire multiple solenoids/valves to the same zone output if you want.
Once sprinkler donuts have been installed, you can mow around the area safely. If you want additional precautions, you can plant small flags around your yard near each sprinkler head.
Can I move my ball if a sprinkler head is in my line?
A sprinkler head is an immovable obstruction and is covered by Rule 24-2. That Rule states that you are entitled to relief for a ball that lies in or on the obstruction or when the obstruction interferes with your area of intended stance or swing.
However, PVC is the pipe of choice for professional Irrigation Installers due to its strength and ability to cope with higher flow/pressure. The PVC pipe should be buried minimum 200mm below finished ground level to protect it.
Remove a few sprinkler heads from each of the zones in your system and cap the plumbing that led to them. Decreasing the number of sprinkler heads will increase the water pressure in those that remain.
Puddles of water around sprinkler heads are signs of leaky valves. To fix a leaky valve, you disassemble the valve, clean it, replace any bad parts and then reassemble it. Usually dirt, gravel or a rock is stuck in the valve causing it to stick open.
Air in the system can contribute to water hammer, as it can travel at a higher velocity than water. When the system is turned on, the water behind the air bubble will speed up, the air will run out of the system, and the result will be water hammer.
The Life Expectancy of an Irrigation System
While different parts of your system may need replacing throughout its life, you can expect the average sprinkler system to last for upwards of 20 years. During that time, you'll likely need to replace your sprinkler heads around the 10-year mark if using high-quality heads.
Sprinkler heads must be a maximum of 12-15 feet apart, depending on the hazard rating of the space (it ranges from Light Hazard to Extra Hazard 1&2), and at least half that distance from the nearest walls (typically 7.5 feet away).
If you try to run the irrigation pump without water or with too much air, you can cause the motor to burn out.
Minelab CTX 3030 is the king of all waterproof metal detectors that are of high performance and of impressive quality. Its target identification has one of the highest accuracies on the market, while its full-color LCD display possesses the readability that was never seen before.
How Long Do Sprinklers Last? The average lifespan of a professional in-ground sprinkler system typically is around 20 years with consistent winterization and care.
Is it expensive to replace a sprinkler head?
Sprinkler head repairs can range from as little as $75 to as much as $150. One irrigation installer, Residential Irrigation Specialists, reported to us that they charge about $115 for parts labor, and service to replace a sprinkler head.
Stake Flags for Marking Sprinkler Heads and Other Objects for Lawn Aeration, Neon Orange Color. We recommend selecting a color that is different from the surrounding colors, such as flowers or decorations, so that the flag can be easily seen. The plastic stake flags are must-have complement for lawn aerator.
